2019 marks the 6th Anniversary of our writing contest.

Askew’s Foods Word on the Lake Writing Contest is open to all writers 18 years and older. All submissions must contain original material, and may not have been previously published, accepted for publication, or have been a winner in another contest prior to the deadline.

Contest opens December 1, 2018.  All submissions must be emailed and received by midnight February 28, 2019. Please note that paper submissions are not accepted.

  • Fiction short stories: 1200 -1500 words
  • Non-fiction: 1200 – 1500 words
  • Poetry: one poem per page. You may submit up to three poems per entry.

Final judges will be announced in January 2019.

Include a cover page listing

  • The writer’s name, address, email address, phone number,
  • Entry title, word length,
  • Award competition category.
  • The author’s name must appear only on the cover page.
  • Each page must include title and page number.
  • Use standard manuscript format: double-spaced, type font: Times New Roman 12.
  • Poetry may be single-spaced.
  • The manuscript must be a WORD document. Your manuscript will be disqualified if you send it as a pdf file or in any format other than WORD or if you send it as a hard (paper) copy.

You may submit your work in the body of your email or as an attachment. Email your submission to contest.saow@gmail.com by midnight on February 28, 2019. State in the subject line of the email: Word on the Lake Writing Contest.

No entries will be returned. If you would like confirmation of receipt of your entry use the request/read receipt option under tools in your email.

Winners will be notified by first week April 2019.

All manuscripts and personal information will be destroyed after the contest winners are announced.

Include entry fee of $15 per submission. Entries will not be considered until the entry fee is received. Please note: there are two options for entry fee payment:  by PayPal on our website or by cheque made out to Shuswap Association of Writers and please add at the bottom of the cheque, Writing Contest, and mail it to:

All First Place winners in each category will receive $150 cash prize plus a 2019 conference package including banquet ($230 value) and be published in the Askew’s Foods Word on the Lake Writing Contest Anthology.

All Second Place winners in each category will receive $75 cash plus a $50 banquet ticket for Saturday Night’s award ceremony and published in the Askew’s Foods’Word on the Lake Writing Contest Anthology.

All Honourable Mention winners in each category will receive $50 cash plus $50 banquet ticket for Saturday Night’s award ceremony and published in the Askew’s Foods Word on the Lake Writing Contest Anthology.

All prizes must be accepted as offered. No cash substitutions for conference package or banquet ticket. The conference package and banquet ticket prizes are not transferable.

In some cases, prizes may not be awarded exactly as noted, according to the discretion of the judges. All winning entries will be published in the Anthology, which will be available at the conference and through the conference website. Winners will be listed on the conference website, www.wordonthelakewritersfestival.com, in the week after the conference.

Right of Publication:

Submission implies the author is granting first right of publication to the Shuswap Association of Writers as winners will be published in our annual anthology. Rights then revert to the author. Entering the contest also grants the Shuswap Association of Writers the right to publish the entrant’s name in the contest anthology and the Shuswap Association of Writers website, should the entrant be short-listed for, or wins, a writing contest prize.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: All entries must be received by email by midnight February 28, 2019. The right to extend the contest deadline is at the discretion of the Shuswap Association of Writers.  Announcements will be made in advance of the deadline if this situation arises.
