The Word on the Lake Writing Contest is open to all writers 18 years and older. All submissions must contain original material, and may not have been previously published, accepted for publication, or have been a winner in another contest prior to the deadline. Contest opens December 1st 2017. All submissions must be emailed and received by midnight February 28th 2018.
Please note that paper or PDF submissions are not accepted.
- Fiction short stories: 1200 -1500 words
- Non-fiction: 1200 – 1500 words
- Poetry: one poem per page. You may submit up to three poems per entry fee.
Final Judges will be announced in February 2018.
Include a cover page listing the writer’s name, address, email address, phone number, entry title, word length, and award competition category. The author’s name must appear only on the cover page. Each page must include the title and page number. Use standard manuscript format: double-spaced, type font: Times New Roman 12. Poetry may be single-spaced. Please proofread and spell check your submission before sending.
You may submit your work in the body of your email or as an attachment Email your submission to: firstname.lastname@example.org . State in the subject line of the email: Word on the Lake Writing Contest.
No entries will be returned. If you would like confirmation of receipt of your entry, use the request/read receipt option under tools in your email.
Short listed writers will be notified by the second week of April 2018.
All manuscripts and personal information will be destroyed after the contest winners are announced.

Winners will be notified no later than the last week of April 2018 .
All First Place winners in each category will receive $150 cash prize plus a 2018 conference package including a ticket for the Saturday night ‘s award ceremony and be published in the Askew’s Foods Word on the Lake Writing Contest Anthology.
All Second Place winners in each category will receive $75 cash plus a ticket for Saturday Night’s award ceremony and be published in the Word on the Lake Writing Contest Anthology.
All Honourable Mention winners in each category will receive $50 cash plus a ticket for Saturday Night’s award ceremony and be published in the Askew’s Foods Word on the Lake Writing Contest Anthology.
All prizes must be accepted as offered. No cash substitutions for conference package or banquet ticket. The conference package and award ceremony ticket prizes are not transferable.
In some cases, prizes may not be awarded exactly as noted, according to the discretion of the judges. All winning entries will be published in the Anthology, which will be available at the conference and through the conference web site. Winners will be listed on the conference website, www.wordonthelakewritersfestival.com, after the conference.
Right of Publication:
Submission implies the author is granting first right of publication to the Shuswap Association of Writers as winners will be published in our annual anthology. Rights then revert to the author. Entering the contest also grants the Shuswap Association of Writers the right to publish the entrant’s name in the contest anthology and the Shuswap Association of Writers website, should the entrant wins a writing contest prize.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: All entries must be received by email by midnight February 28th,2018. The right to extend the conference deadline is at the discretion of the Shuswap Association of Writers. Announcements will be made in advance of the deadline if this situation arises.
